Hi everyone!

I hope it has been an enjoyable summer so far. Last weekend, The Black Lamb in Port Hope, ON hosted an outdoor spinning day and we had a wonderful time.

We had a wonderful potluck lunch and the weather was perfect, except for about a 10 minute rain, then freakish hailstorm. Luckily we could take cover under the patio’s roof.

Here are a few of the spinners spinning away.

One of the nice things about spinning at The Black Lamb is you are in the midst of an idyllic, beautiful garden. You get to look out over this:

Here are some yarns drying from the day:

These were spun by Laurie, the owner of The Black Lamb. She is a wonderful spinner, pushing herself to spin bulky yarns, moving away from her normal scary laceweight.

Here’s an action shot of Mat, of Manspun Yarns, bobbin spinning away!

Also, we are gearing up for Worldwide Spin in Public Day! As September 18th is creeping up on us, it’s time to get to planning your spinning events and sending them into us. You can find more details on our sister site – Worldwide Spin in Public day! Check out the myriad of events we already have scheduled. Should be fun!

My good friend, Tracy, was kind enough to allow me to share this story here…so please enjoy!

Malabar Coast

How romantic does that sound – the Malabar Coast. The Lakshadweep Sea.

I waded in it, and it was very warm.

Spent a week in Kerala, and saw so many beautiful sights, but first I want to indulge my penchant for beach pictures and talk about the Alleppy beach.

Totally wanted one of these kites, made of single sheets of mylar, with videocassette tape tails. It was a Sunday, and lots of people seemed to be headed to the beach in family groups. Heh – I actually thought it was a bit crowded when we arrived.

Further up the beach, though, it was more solitary. For some reason, I never get tired of the beach footprint photo. Evokes the whole thoughtful barefootness of being there.

We were not really alone, of course. Roving groups of young Indian men approached us and competed among themselves to act ridiculous. But then, while I was doing a little spinning,

A decently-behaved set of local youths came and started chatting with my husband in broken English. They asked him what I was doing, and I demonstrated how I was turning loose fibers into string, showing them they way twist enters the fiber. They were delighted, and one kid pulled out his phone to get a picture, then decided it really called for video. So I have actually been videotaped spinning on the beach in Alleppy, Kerala, South India. If anyone sees it on YouTube, you have to let me know.

(This is especially funny for those of us who devote ourselves to documenting indigenous textile techniques, and scour the Internet for footage of traditional spinning – complete role reversal.)

As we made our way back to the main family area, we were stunned by the sight:

It’s hard to convey in one photo, but the beach entrance was teeming with families, and the sky was filled with variously sized dots of flying kites. This was clearly the place to be, of a balmy Sunday evening.

Editor’s Notes:

You can find more of Tracy here: http://einesaite.blogspot.com/

Our friend Melissa from Wild Hare Fiber sent some lovely highlight photos from WWSIP day!

She notes:

I hope you had as much fun as I did! Here is a picture of me spinning with other members of the Blue Ridge Spinner’s and Weavers Guild at the Bluemont Fair in Loudon County, Virginia (I’m the one in pink on the right):

And here is what I spun that day:

left to right: (1) spun from hand-dyed wool top, to be plied into a dk weight yarn, 3 oz. of fiber (2) spun from a blended batt, worsted-weight singles, 2.7 oz. of fiber (3) spun from hand-dyed superwash wool top, bulky single, 4 oz. of fiber, and (4) handpainted superwash merino top, spun to fine singles (haven’t decided on plying). I didn’t finish the bobbin on that one before the event ended, so there’s more to come on that one. (All the fibers are ones that I dye and sell in my etsy shop.)
