Such a fun day! Thanks to all of those that could join us!

A Spinning Demo and More WWSIP Day Highlights

cindy

Our friend Kevin was in touch to let us know about the Aurora Country Festival at Kentucky Lake.

It falls on October 2,3,and 4th in Aurora, KY.  Kevin will be there  from 9-5 although he may not be spinning the whole time.  So, if you are in Aurora, drop by and say hello to Kevin. You can find him on Ravelry here.

Now on to some more highlights from WWSIP day! Today we take a look at the Janesville, WI event sponsored by the Janesville Area Stitch n Bitch. You can also find them on Ravelry and Facebook.  The coordinator of the event, Judith, reports that 5 people learned how to spin on the hand spindle. There were demonstrations on and Ashford wheel and a Great (Walking) wheel. They had great weather, good sales, and found some great new friends!

And, here area photo and a video from Jayne, the Seargeant Majorette! She notes

The photo was taken on the M4 bus by my sister. This is of  me using the spindle I always carry with me, a featherweight Bossie. The video was taken by a nice man on a bicycle who seemed to have fallen in love with someone in our group, because he hung around for the longest time! I figured, since I always spin in public, I should do something more obtrusive for the day, so I brought my new steel-tipped Navajo spindle. We drew more attention from photographers than the band that was playing!

Highlights from Airfield Farm – Dublin, Ireland

Our friend Janet sent some photos to us from the Dublin, Ireland event at Airfield farm.

I absolutely loved this quote from Janet’s blog:
“We could think of other spinners at their wheels all over the world.  I thought of how New Year’s Eve is celebrated with it starting on the other side of the world and gradually moving around until it completes  its 24 hour cycle somewhere west of Hawaii.    When we started our spinning, spinners in Australia had probably finished and spinners in Seattle had yet to start”

And they could look on at ponies from where they were spinning – how nice!

Tomorrow is WWSIP Day – Get Ready!!

Hi Everyone,

Tomorrow is Worldwide Spin in Public Day! This is your last chance to get in on one of the great events over at http://www.wwsipday.com

Today, a few things to help you get ready!

Pack up your spinning wheel, make sure it is in good working order. Bring along an ‘emergency spinning wheel repair kit’ – include some spinning wheel oil, extra yarn for your leader, extra drive band if necessary, hot glue gun and glue, any screwdrivers that are used on your wheel’s fittings, and anything else that could save you if your wheel had a problem. This will vary from wheel to wheel. Or, bring your drop spindle and a smile!

Prepare some lovely fibers for your spinning. Get to carding or pre-drafting – whatever will make it easier to spin for you.

Don’t forget your bobbins, niddy-noddy, lazy kate, orifice hook and any other equipment you might need to spin.

Check your directions to your event and make sure you have contact information in case you get lost or have trouble finding your group!

Bring a camera – I want to see lots of pictures from events all over the world! Send them to me at editor@spininpublic.com.  This is also your way of documenting that you were part of the very first Worldwide Spin in Public Day ever! We have worked so hard to organize all of these events and would love to know how they turn out, what you learn, what you loved, etc.

Check the weather forecast - make sure you bring a tent or umbrella, sweater or sunblock to be comfortable.

Most importantly, have fun! We hope to hear from you after your event, see pictures, videos, hear about contests, experiences, etc.

Happy Spinning

Spinning and Weaving Week – October 5-11, 2009

cindy

The Spinning & Weaving Association President, Irene Schmoller notified us via Ravelry of Spinning and Weaving Week which is being held October 5-11, 2009 by the SWA. For more information, visit their site: http://spinweave.org/news/events-upcoming.html

From their site:

Spinning & Weaving Week is an outreach event where talented spinners and weavers join together to celebrate their craft and share it with the public.

Founded by the Weaving and Spinning Council in 1981, and now sponsored by The Handweavers Guild of America, Spinning & Weaving Week is celebrated worldwide through events at local yarn shops, studios, guilds, and fiber festivals.

If you are a fiber artist and want to share your craft with others, you can join the activities your local shop has organized or host your own event. All celebrations help raise awareness about spinning and weaving, no matter how small or informal. SWA has put together ideas to help you plan your own Spinning & Weaving Week event.

3 Days To WWSIP Day! New Spinterviews and Videos, Spin-off Magazine and a Flickr Find!

cindy

Hi everyone – we are getting down to the final days before Worldwide Spin in Public Day so if you have not registered or found an event near you, check out our sister site http://www.wwsipday.com and get in while the getting’s on!

We posted a new Spinterview today with Esther of Jazzturtle Creates – check it out here.

Also, if you scroll down, you will see a new video on our righthand side panel. This is a lovely one we found on Woolen Longdraw spinning!

There is a bit of exciting news around Casa-del-Spin in Public,  I (Cindy) and a bunch of my art yarn spinning friends and colleagues have been featured in the latest issue of Spin-off magazine. Because there were a few errors in crediting photos, Spin-off have posted the correct article on their site here. You just have to register and sign in to download it, but totally worth it – trust me! This article embraces something we hold dear at Spin in Public – finding community in spinning, and in all arts and crafts. This is a wonderful article written by ever so talented writer, Tracy Hudson and it really demonstrates a great group of people living in their work. I am too proud of all of us. :)

On with today’s Flickr Find!

Today’s Flickr find is from photographer Shandeh and she writes:

“Today was my first spinning demonstration. I spun angora yarn from an angora rabbit named “Miss Priss” at the Mint Hill Historical Society Fall Festival. It was so much fun!”

More of her ph0tos can be found here.
